Men’s 1st XV Rugby Coach

Purpose of the Role

Lead the Men’s 1st XV programme by planning and delivering high-quality training and matchday coaching that aligns with Battersea Ironsides RFC values and playing philosophy.

Develop players and leaders (especially captains), using modern coaching and analysis to improve performance and support the long-term success and sustainability of the club.

Key Responsibilities

Coaching & matchday

– Plan and deliver two midweek sessions plus matchday coaching, covering all aspects of the game (attack, defense, forwards, backs).

– Build and implement game plans with the coaching team; manage matchday decision-making, substitutions and in-game adjustments.

– Use video analysis (e.g. Veo) to support review and improvement; regular sharing of clips expected.

Player development & culture

– Develop players’ technical, tactical, physical and mental skills, creating an inclusive, accountable high-performance environment.

– Grow leadership across the squad, with specific focus on senior players and captains.

– Support retention and recruitment through regular player engagement and clear communication.

Squad management & operations

– Work with the DoR, coaches, captains and team manager on selection in line with club policies and league requirements.

– Monitor welfare, availability and workload; liaise with physio leads on injuries and return-to-play timelines.

– Attend playing committee meetings; contribute to planning and operate within agreed senior-squad budgets.

Club integration & pathway

– Build strong links with Mini & Youth and create a clear pathway into senior rugby, supporting Colts transition.

– Help develop coaches across the club in collaboration with the wider coaching group.

Governance & development

– Ensure compliance with RFU regulations, safeguarding standards and best practice.- Commit to ongoing CPD and keep up to date with coaching trends and RFU guidance.

Key Relationships

Reports to: Director of Rugby

Works closely with: Senior Leadership Team (SLT), Coaching Team, Team Manager,

Captains and Club Board(s).

Time Commitment

– Two midweek training sessions (approx. 1.5 hours each)

– Saturday matchdays

– Additional meetings and planning as required

Person Specification

Essential: RFU Level 3 (or working towards); strong rugby union knowledge; excellent

communication; strong organisation/time management; ability to motivate and develop

players.

Desirable: Senior club coaching experience; video analysis experience;

leadership/mentoring; understanding of player pathway development.
